The Lamborghini Countach is one of the most instantly recognisable motor cars ever made, the styling was a staggering departure from its predecessor (the Miura) – so much so that on the unveiling of the prototype in 1971 a member of the press exclaimed “countach!” a local phrase meaning “holy smokes!”. The name suited the car so well that Lamborghini adopted it, and a legend was born.

This 1976 Porsche 934/5 IMSA Racer, dubbed “El Salvador”, is a former world championship winning racer that’s seen action right around the world. Its first ever race outing was at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1976 where it took an impressive 2nd place (in class) in the capable hands of the Gelo Racing team headed by Georg Loos.
The 1982 Indianapolis 500 was unique for a number of reasons, it was the first year that ground-effect cars were to race around the infamous circuit, the 1st and 2nd place finishers were separated by just 0.16 seconds, which was the closest finish in Indy 500 history up until this point.

Lotus Goes Turbo is a 30 minute documentary covering the Lotus Formula One teams switch from naturally aspirated to turbo V6 engines in the 1983 season. It’s a fantastic little piece of history, seeing engineers designing a Formula One car on a drafting table with a pencil and slide rule is a reminder of just how brilliant these guys actually were.
The Sydney Forensic Photography Archive is an incredible resource of early 20th century photographs, the best section of the archive has to be the mugshots – as you can see below they were all taken with “wet plate” cameras, a type of photography that’s actually beginning to catch on again due to the stunning depth and clarity of the images that are produced.
