The Sydney Forensic Photography Archive is an incredible resource of early 20th century photographs, the best section of the archive has to be the mugshots – as you can see below they were all taken with “wet plate” cameras, a type of photography that’s actually beginning to catch on again due to the stunning depth and clarity of the images that are produced.

Buzz Aldrin
This excellent photograph of Buzz Aldrin was taken by Neil Armstrong in 1969, aboard the Apollo 11 Lunar Module just before they landed on the surface of the moon.
The Beaching of Submarine SM U-118
These extraordinary images were taken in 1919 on the beach at Hastings in Surrey, the submarine is a WWI model designated SM U-118 – she was being towed to France to be scrapped when the tow cable snapped during a storm.

Injured Indians
It’s amazing to see how badly banged up these Indians are relative to the total lack of injuries displayed by the men holding them up, I assume they’re the riders but I can’t see so much as a scratch on them.

This appears to be Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Bonham sitting astride a couple of Suzuki 2-strokes and what I think is a Yamaha 3-wheeler…
