History Speedrun: The Coleman CT200U Minibike

The Coleman CT200U is an old-school 200cc (actually 196cc) pull-start minibike, a throwback to the early days of the minibike craze when low-volume American manufacturers dominated the market, long before the Big Four Japanese motorcycle marques got involved and introduced true mass-production to the genre.

One of my favorite features of the CT200U is that the owner’s manual lists its front and rear suspension as “low pressure tires,” while technically true, it also shows just how simply these bikes are made.

The layout of the CT200U was directly influenced by the American minibikes of the 1960s, a time when when rigid-framed machines powered by lawnmower engines seemed to be almost everywhere, and most riders got their start on them.

Taco, founded by the off-road racer John Steen, was one of the best-known minibike makers of the time period. More sophisticated factory minis from Honda and Kawasaki, including the Z50 and the Coyote came later, and more of less pushed the local low-volume manufacturers like Rupp, Bonanza, Lil Indian, and Arctic Cat out of the market.

The Coleman CT200U is powered by an air-cooled, overhead-valve single-cylinder engine with a 68 mm bore, a 54 mm stroke, 8.5:1 compression and a recoil starter. Coleman rates it at 5.1 bhp at 3,600 rpm and 8.1 lb ft of torque at 2,500 rpm, although retail listings often describe the engine more aspirationally as producing 6.5 bhp.

Either way, it’s enough power to get you moving, but not enough to get yourself into serious trouble. Unless you’re exceptionally talented at finding trouble that is.

Power goes back through a centrifugal clutch and chain drive with a 10:1 gear ratio, so the rider has nothing to shift and no clutch to operate. The bike has one brake, a drum on the rear wheel, which is worked by a lever on the left handlebar. Having only a rear brake helps avoid new riders locking up the front and having a surprise dirt breakfast.

The bike rides on AT19x7-8 tires from the factory, inflated to a soft 10 psi, it has a 0.95 gallon fuel tank, gear racks front and rear, and it has a claimed top speed of 20 mph, with a curb weight of 121 lbs. It was officially recommended for riders aged 13 and older, however plenty of kids quite a bit younger than that have had the best summers of their lives tearing around a paddock on one.

Supreme announced a surprise collaboration with Coleman on Instagram in mid-2017 and two days later the bike went on sale (online only), as part of the brand’s Spring/Summer 2017 season. It was painted in Supreme’s box-logo red with black accents, with a Supreme logo on the fender and a branded seat.

The standard CT200U usually sold for $699.99, and Supreme’s version was priced at $998. It sold out so quickly that many who wanted one simply couldn’t get one. Their prices on the aftermarket quickly shot well into the mid-four-figures, and values have climbed higher since then.

Image DescriptionThis is an original 2017 Supreme x Coleman CT200U minibike, it’s an unused example of the limited-edition collaboration that was released as part of Supreme’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection.

This particular example is described as new old stock as it’s reportedly remained factory-new and has never been started since leaving its original box. That makes it considerably more interesting as a collectible than a used example, particularly given how quickly the original online release sold out.

It’s now due to across the auction block with Bonhams on October the 11th with a price guide of €6,500 – €7,500 which works out to approximately $7,400 – $8,550 USD. If you’d like to read more about it or register to bid you can visit the listing here.
