The Caterham 7 is one of my top “must have” cars, the company used to be a small kit car company producing the official, modern version of the classic Lotus 7 however in recent times they’ve gone from strength to strength and now own their own Formula 1 team.
What this means of course, is that it’s now possible to order a car from a Formula 1 team, build it in your garage, then race it against Ferraris, Porsches and Lamborghinis. And win.
The basic kit for the Caterham Roadsport costs $40,498 in the US, this includes everything you need to build the car less the engine and transmission. Most builders go for 2.0 litre 4-pots producing around 200hp, this is enough to give the car a 0-60mph time of 4.1 seconds, a power to weight ratio of 370 bhp-per-tonne and a top speed of 145 mph.
The Caterham is renowned for being able to embarrass almost any super-car you throw at it and a Caterham holds one of the quickest times ever recorded around the Top Gear test track.
If you’ve now decided that you’re going to be needing one ASAP, hit the link here and have fun.
