History Speedrun: Danish Fuel
Danish Fuel is a small company in Denmark that was founded to turn 20 liter military jerry cans into wall-mounted bar cabinets, a model line it’s since expanded to include bathroom cabinets, key and first-aid cabinets, suitcases, and even a portable speaker. The firm’s first prototype bar cabinet design was introduced internationally at the Salone del Mobile in Milan, and it quickly became a best-seller.
The company now runs two product lines – for the Limited Edition cabinets, which use recycled jerry cans, production takes roughly three weeks across several subcontractors in Denmark. The cans are burned in a furnace for 24 hours to loosen old paint, rust, and fuel residue, then sandblasted with a mix of recycled sand and water, laser cut, washed, oven-dried, and repainted.
The Tribute Edition bodies are newly made to Danish Fuel’s own design and as a result they can skip the paint stripping stage. Shelves on both are molded plywood, in FSC- or PEFC-certified veneers. The company says that members of the Danish Royal Family are among the owners of its designs, and their cabinet have now been shipped to dozens of countries around the world.
The Jerry Can Bar Cabinets T.E
The Army Green Bar Cabinet is part of Danish Fuel’s Tribute model line. For these cabinets, Danish Fuel uses newly manufactured can bodies made to its own design, as reproductions of the German military originals. The panels are smooth, free of dents and corrosion from years of use.
Danish Fuel dates the original can design to 1939, the start of WWII, but it’s actually older than that. Schwelmer Eisenwerk Müller & Co. of Schwelm, Westphalia, developed it to a 1935/36 Wehrmacht tender under chief engineer Vinzenz Grünvogel. A trial batch of 5,000 reached troops in 1936, and formal adoption came in July 1937.
The jerry can was a German innovation that the Allies quickly adopted – captured enemy jerry cans were prized by Allied troops, some even took them back to their home countries after the war as keepsakes.
The listed base price of Danish Fuel’s Bar Cabinet T.E runs from €525 to €535, but that’s before optional extras. The listed weight is 6.2 kgs, with dimensions of 50 cm x 35 cm x 20 cm, and shelf veneers offered in oak, walnut, or cork. Options include a four-digit ID number embossed into a tag plate, and a stainless steel certificate of origin in a tin box, with the ID number engraved on the rear and the owner’s initials optional on the front. Mounting is either screws through the rear panel or leather carved straps up top.

Danish Fuel states that its Army Green is the same color as German tanks during World War II, specifically Olivgrün rather than the more common Dunkelgelb (dark yellow) or Dunkelgrau which was an earlier dark-brown disruptive pattern.
