
The Series 1 Land Rover is still one of the most capable 4x4s ever made, it may not have traction control, independent suspension or any fancy buttons but it did have extraordinary lightness. Although perhaps Kam’s Land Rover wouldn’t be so light with it’s driver onboard.
Kam the elephant was a star attraction at the Bertram Mills Circus, they actually bought a 1959 Series 1 and modified it with a central steering wheel and a huge, padded seat over the rear axle. Kam would drive the tenacious 4×4 around the circus and often around the camp site although his inability to change gears restricted his top speed, somewhat thankfully.
