History Speedrun: Mammoth Overland

Mammoth Overland is a company that builds unique off-road trailers in Woodinville, Washington – in the same facility where its parent company, Vashon Aircraft, assembles parts for the Ranger R7 light sport aircraft. The trailers are made from the same aluminum as the aircraft, held together with the same rivets, and their panels are all formed on the same machines.

Vashon was founded in 2012 by John Torode, he originally started the company with the goal of building an affordable all-metal light aircraft. Mammoth Overland followed in 2021 with the HV, a teardrop trailer built as a riveted double-wall aluminum shell around high-density foam insulation, mounted on a steel frame with Timbren independent suspension.

There’s no wood anywhere in the structure, and the company pitched its first trailers to pilots at air shows before later finding a large audience in the overlanding community, for very fairly reasons.

Scott Taylor, the current President of Mammoth Overland and the President and COO of Vashon, spent much of his career as a production manager on Boeing military and commercial aircraft programs. Under his direction the company developed its defining product in 2023 – after customers repeatedly asked whether the trailers were bear-proof.

The answer was the XLE (Xtinction Level Event) trailer, which debuted at Overland Expo West in 2023 with a sealed, positively pressurized cabin, medical-grade air filtration, push-button bear spray cannons, weapons storage, and optional Level 3 bulletproofing. Taylor said the trailer was designed to handle everything “from bears to wildfires to social unrest,” and he’s acknowledged the concept is partly satire of how extreme overlanding equipment has become.

The original apocalypse trailer even included a six-bottle wine rack. After all, you might as well have a cheeky glass of wine or two if the world is ending outside your trailer.

The Mammoth Overland catalog now includes an array of models, from the HV at $32,500 USD through the cold-weather WLY at $59,500 USD, the XLE and the full-height TL “Tall Boy” at $69,500 USD each, and the SKL – an $11,500 USD hard-sided aluminum rooftop camper.

The Mammoth Overland XLE Trailer

The XLE, short for Xtinction-Level Escape, measures in at 18 feet 4.2 inches long and 9 feet 5.5 inches tall, weighs 4,500 lbs dry, and it has an impressive 22 inches of ground clearance, riding on 33 inch HD terrain tires with forged aluminum wheels. Two full-size spares come as standard, along with a front rock guard and four pass-through storage bays.

The protective systems that are built into the XLE start with the cabin itself, which is pressurized, with all air filtered through dual medical-grade HEPA units to seal occupants off from smoke, dust, and airborne contaminants.

The windows are bullet-resistant, with remotely operated blast shields that close over them, and entry is through a reinforced vault-style rear door.

The exterior of the XLE is fitted with a 360º night-vision CCTV array that watches the perimeter continuously. If something turns up, the occupants can trigger a remote sonic defense system, four bear-spray dispersal units covering a 25 foot radius around the trailer, or, as an $8,000 option, a remotely deployed 37 mm smoke-and-flare launcher that reloads from inside the cabin. The roof has an observation deck with two standing platforms, six remote strobe lights, and a rapid-access escape hatch.

The built-in power systems are no less impressive, it has a 1,200 amp-hour lithium battery bank supported by a 400-watt solar array and a portable backup generator, while an integrated dual propane system supplies heating and cooking needs.

For connectivity, it has an integrated Starlink system that offers high-speed broadband internet almost anywhere on the face of the earth. It also has a 45 liter 12 volt refrigerator, onboard drinking water filtration, and a 12 volt air conditioning system – alongside the king bed and interior shower inherited from the Mammoth Overland TL travel trailer platform.

Onboard storage includes two long-rifle compartments, a gun safe, a concealed under-mattress safe, an integrated medical kit, a weather station, a Geiger counter, and a two-way radio for communication when cellular networks are gone.

The Mammoth Overland XLE is now available to order direct from the company’s official online store here, with an MSRP of $123,994 USD before options. If you’d like to read more or order your own you can visit the listing here.
