Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky – 93 Points

Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky is distilled through copper-pot “Coffey” stills that were imported to Japan from Scotland in 1963.

Despite the similar name, the Coffey still has nothing to do with coffee, they look like towers of individual square-sided copper pots and they can be run continuously – unlike pot still that must be emptied and reloaded for each batch.

The benefit of using Coffey stills is that they tend to produce a cleaner, stronger distillate with a lighter body and more delicate flavor profile.

The Nikka Whisky Distilling Co.

The Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. was founded by Masataka Taketsuru, he’s now known as the godfather of Japanese whisky. He was born into a family that produced sake, but he was far more interested in whisky, so after graduating he set off to Scotland where he studied whisky-making at the University of Glasgow. He apprenticed at distilleries at night, learning to distill and blend whisky first-hand at some of Scotland’s most prestigious distilleries.

On returning to Japan he created the country’s first single malt whisky in the 1920s, and in 1934 he opened the Nikka Whisky Distilling Co – today Japan is the only country (other than Australia) to have beaten to Scots at their own game at the World Whiskies Award, winning the “world’s best single malt whisky” on multiple occasions.

Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky

Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky is made by the company at their original distillery using a pair of Coffey stills that have been in operation for 55 years, following distillation it’s matured in traditional oak casks.

Once aged and bottled, it has an aroma of tropical fruits, bananas and papaya. The aroma gives way to notes of soft vanilla, caramel, wafers and dried fruit on the palate, and leads to a finish accented by notes of citrus.

The whisky earned a score of 93 points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge in 2014, which named it Japanese Whisky of the Year.

Below you’ll see buttons to either buy some for yourself, or read more about it on the Nikka website.

Each Savage is made entirely from food-grade 18-8 stainless steel, the name is derived from the 18% chromium and 8% nickel that’s added to the steel to ensure that it’s highly corrosion resistant, and thanks to the relatively high chromium content it can be easily polished to a mirror-like finish.

This hip flask has the classic upright-rectangular shape with a slight curve in the back to make it perfect for residence in either a pant or jacket pocket. It has a ribbed, screw down cap and it measures in at 3.38″ x 0.925″ x 4.72″.

Mt. Everest Whiskey Glasses by Whiskey Peaks

These tumblers have a topographically correct 3D imprint of Mt. Everest in the base, giving you something to look at when you’re working your way through a glass of bourbon, single malt, or rye.

Whiskey Peaks make each of these glasses individually, using premium lead-free glass and traditional glass blowing techniques. This set comes with two Mt. Everest glasses that measure in at 3 5/8” high by 3” in diameter, and the name of the mountain is etched into the base.

Mt Everest was first successfully climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on the 29th of May 1953, the two men made a pact not to reveal which of them had stepped on the summit first – ensuring the two friends would go down in history together. Many years later Tenzing told an interviewer that it had been Hillary who first stood atop the summit, perhaps a final act of respect for his friend from New Zealand.

The two glasses you see here are sold by the pair in recognition of the remarkable friendship shared by the two adventurers.

These tumblers are an ideal addition to the home bar, and they make excellent gifts for those who like a calming glass of Grandpa’s cough medicine from time to time too.

North Georgia Whiskey + Moonshine Still

The North Georgia Still Company prides themselves on making world class copper stills using traditional techniques. They use 100% American copper, and they ship all their moonshine and whiskey making gear out in plain brown boxes – so the boys in blue and the nosey neighbors don’t know you’re turning to a life of bootlegging like Popcorn Sutton.

The still you see here is their 2.5 gallon kit, made from pure copper with lead-free silver solder, and each still is precision cut, hand rolled, assembled, and soldered by the same craftsman from start to finish.

Once complete, they’re then pressure and leak tested – this ensures that each still is safe and ready for distilling. The North Georgia Still Company have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and they’re happy to take orders for custom-sized stills.

The 2.5 gallon still costs $240 USD – making it a very affordable entry to the world of home distilling, whether you plan to make whiskey, vodka, gin, bourbon, or moonshine.

Documentary: This is the Last Dam Run of Likker I’ll Ever Make

This is the Last Dam Run of Likker I’ll Ever Make is a cult classic documentary about Popcorn Sutton, a legendary American Appalachian moonshiner and bootlegger.

Popcorn tragically committed suicide at age 62 rather than report to federal prison, after having been convicted of moonshining and illegal firearm possession.

He was born Marvin Sutton, but picked up his nickname after getting frustrated with a popcorn machine in a local bar, and taking vengeance on it with a pool cue.

Of Scottish-Irish ancestry, Popcorn came from a long line of moonshiners and bootleggers, and he discovered a love for writing later in life.

He wrote a popular guide to moonshining in 1999 called “Me and My Likker” – the New York Times review described it as “a rambling, obscene, and often hilarious account of his life in the trade”.

This documentary won a Regional Emmy Award and is considered essential viewing for any fan of moonshine or modern American history. It was filmed and produced by Sucker Punch Pictures, and you can grab a copy on DVD here if you’d like to keep a copy or give it as a gift.

He’s taken traditional scotch with five years of barrel ageing and combined it with Bourbon that has two years of barrel ageing, the final blend then goes back into bourbon barrels for finishing.

The non-traditional combination of scotch and bourbon is likely to give purist whiskey aficionados a case of the vapors, but for the rest of us it offers an interesting and refreshing excuse to roll out the tumblers and have a tasting.

Tasting Notes From The Twenty Third Street Distillery

Distinctive, unusual, delicious. Toasty Oak like aromas with hints of sweet sherry are lifted and sweetened by floral and fruity notes. Rounded malt like flavours and the rich sherry characters are evident on the palate, with as toasty oak and some what oily nuttiness to the finish. To be savoured neat or with a little water or ice.

Note: If you live outside Australia may need to special order this at your local whiskey retailer.

There are few pocketed items more important than a discrete hip flask. They make even the dreariest of weddings entertaining – not to mention christenings. When choosing a flask it’s important to get one that’s slim enough not to show in your breast pocket, and you typically want to avoid cheaper examples as they often exhibit suspect metallurgy.

This flask from Sir Jacks is made from highly polished (lead free) pewter with a hammered finish. It has a 6 ounce capacity, a captive screw top, and it comes with an english bridle leather sheath. Each is made by hand in Britain, and is shipped out with a black gift box.
