You Can Now Buy A Functioning HAL 9000

Anyone who’s ever had an argument with Siri or Alexa will already be familiar with the parallels to HAL 9000 – the prescience of the digital Arthur C. Clarke character has proven to be truly startling.

Now for the first time ever you can buy your own fully-functional HAL 9000 in either wall-mounted and voice-interactive Command Console, or in desk-mounted Bluetooth 4.0 form with it connected to your mobile device and digital assistant (Siri/Alexa etc).

The HAL 9000 is built by MRG and it’s officially licensed by Warner Bros, it has a glass primary lens, a brushed aluminum faceplate, extruded aluminum trim, and built-in magnets for mounting on a desk or a wall.

The ideal set up for a personal HAL 9000 would obviously be in the garage, programmed with your garage doors named the “pod bay doors” for hours of endless fun.

The HAL 9000 is currently almost 700% funded on IndieGoGo but it’s still possible (at the time of writing) to get one of the final places at the lowest price point.

The HJC IS-5 X-Wing Fighter Pilot Helmet – DOT Approved

The HJC IS-5 X-Wing Fighter Pilot Helmet is A DOT-approved motorcycle helmet designed to look a lot like the helmets worn by the rebel X-Wing pilots from the original films.

The X-Wing first appeared in A New Hope, followed by Return of the Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back, with a new appearance in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The helmet has a lightweight polycarbonate composite shell and an integrated, amber-tinted, flip-up HJ-V8 sunshield, the interior has a SuperCool moisture-wicking, anti-bacterial fabric, and it has a removable/washable liner and cheek pads.

With an MSRP of $179.99 the HJC IS-5 X-Wing Fighter Pilot Helmet is a relatively inexpensive way to bring a little Star Wars into your garage (or living room if your spouse is understanding), and finally live out that childhood dream – it could also form the foundation of this year’s Halloween costume.

The NASA Saturn V Rocket Owners’ Workshop Manual

The NASA Saturn V Owners’ Workshop Manual is a comprehensive guide to the world’s most famous rocket, best known for its role in sending the Apollo missions, including Apollo 11, to the Moon.

Each Saturn V launch cost $185 million in 1960s dollars, that’s over $1.1 billion today, the rocket had a payload to LEO of 310,000 lbs (140,000 kgs) or 155 US tons – that’s the equivalent of 103 1965 Ford Mustangs.

The Saturn V was used by NASA between 1967 and 1973 and it remains the only launch vehicle to carry humans beyond low Earth orbit – although hopefully that last feat will be repeated sooner rather than later.

The Haynes NASA Saturn V Owners’ Workshop Manual runs 176 pages long and includes a staggering amount of information, including highly-detailed engineering diagrams and period images – making it an essential buy for any space geek. It’s also a great conversation piece to leave on your coffee table.

Official Description:

Few launch vehicles are as iconic and distinctive as NASA’s behemoth rocket, the Saturn V, and none left such a lasting impression on those who watched it ascend. Developed with the specific brief to send humans to the Moon, it pushed rocketry to new scales.

Its greatest triumph is that it achieved its goal repeatedly with an enviable record of mission success. Haynes’ Saturn V Manual tells the story of this magnificent and hugely powerful machine. It explains how each of the vehicle’s three stages worked; Boeing’s S-IC first stage with a power output as great as the UK’s peak electricity consumption, North American Aviation’s S-II troubled second stage, Douglas’s workhorse S-IVB third stage with its instrument unit brain – as much a spacecraft as a rocket.

From the decision to build it to the operation of its engines’ valves and pumps, this lavishly illustrated and deeply informative book offers a deeper appreciation of the amazing Saturn V.

LeviMoon – The World’s First Levitating Moon Lamp

The LeviMoon holds the distinction of being the world’s first levitating moon lamp, it was developed by the team at Coocepts to realistically portray the lunar surface – though as this desk-based moon isn’t locked in a tidal orbit like the real Moon, you can see the whole 360 degree surface as it rotates.

Each LeviMoon is 3D printed in high-resolution, giving it remarkably realistic craters and shading. You can choose from two light settings, a cool white that replicates the color of the Moon when it’s high in the sky, or a warm amber glow that evokes the look of a rising or setting Moon that’s low on the horizon. Both LED light settings can be both dimmed and brightened, allowing you to match the lighting in the room where it’s based.

The secret to the LeviMoon’s ability to hover lies with its hidden magnets. The Walnut base and the base of the LeviMoon both have matching magnets, and the base can be set to rotate the hovering moon, or suspend it without motion.

Interestingly, the LeviMoon wirelessly charges itself from the base, so you never have to remove it and plug it in. The base provides all the power required for both rotation and illumination.

The moon measures in at 5.9″ in diameter, and the base is 4.8″ x 4.8″ x 1.2″, the LED voltage runs between 0.1w and 1.5w depending on settings, and the moon contains a 600mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

The Voyager Golden Record LP Box Set – Earth-Bound Version

The Voyager Golden Record LP Box Set was developed as an Earth-bound companion for the famous golden records contained within both the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 space probes launched in 1977.

As of 2018, Voyager 1 is now the most distant man-made object from the Earth – over 21,000,000,000 kilometres away and continuing to increase at a rate of 520 million kilometers (~320 million miles) a year.

The original golden record was actually gold-plated copper with a 12 inch (30 cm) diameter, fitted inside an aluminium case. The cover contains basic diagrams explaining how to play the record, and how to decipher the images contained within.

Inside The Voyager Golden Record LP Box Set

The Voyager Golden Record LP Box Set is an expansive tribute to the Voyager record and the probe itself, it contains three translucent gold 140 gram vinyl LPs in poly-lined paper sleeves, three heavyweight jackets (gold ink on black) a full-color 96-page softcover book containing all images included on the original Voyager Interstellar Record, gallery of images transmitted back from the Voyager probes, and a new essay by Timothy Ferris – the producer of the original golden record.

These records contain spoken greetings in 55 languages (and one whale language), and an exhaustive collection of Earth music – from Bach and Blind Willie Johnson, to Azerbaijani bagpipes and Navajo chants.

Elsewhere inside the box you’ll find a gold foil print of the Voyager Golden Record cover diagram on special archival paper, measuring in at 12″ x 12″. There’s also a Voyager trajectories turntable slipmat (gold ink on black felt) and a full-color plastic digital download card for all audio of the Voyager Golden Record (offered in either MP3 or FLAC formats).

Order Your Own

There are very few people interested in space, NASA, or technology in general who don’t already know about the Voyager program and its famous golden records. At $98 USD, this box set deserves pride of place next to any self-respecting space geek’s record player.

NASA Space Tourism Posters – Free To Download & Print

These NASA Space Tourism Posters were developed by a creative team of visual strategists inside JPL known as “The Studio”. Altogether there are 9 artists, designers, and illustrators, and they worked alongside Jet Propulsion Laboratory-Caltech scientists and engineers on each design.

The poster series started out as a project within the JPL to celebrate the discovery of new planets outside our own solar system – known as exoplanets. A tourism poster was commissioned for each of the then-known exoplanets, later the director of JPL would take a vacation at the Grand Canyon and see some retro tourism posters. He then decided to extend the poster series to include the planets and  moons of our own solar system, and Voyager.

NASA and the JPL have loaded the full series online at a size of 20 x 30 inches and 300 DPI – meaning they’re perfect to print out as posters for bedrooms, offices, garages, sheds, living rooms. and anywhere else you might want to hang them.

The NASA Space Tourism Posters are listed below at 1600px wide, making them ideal for use as a digital wallpaper on many smartphones or tablets (depending on your screen size of course).

If you’d like to download the full resolution TIFF files you can click here to download them direct from NASA / JPL.

The artists are Liz Barrios De La Torre (Ceres, Europa), Stefan Bucher (Jupiter Design), Invisible Creature (Grand Tour, Mars, Enceladus), Joby Harris (Kepler 16b, Earth, Kepler 186f, PSO J318.5-22, Titan), Jessie Kawata (Venus), Lois Kim (Typography for Venus and Europa), Ron Miller (Jupiter Illustration).

1957 Sputnik-1 Prototype Test Model

The Soviet Union launched Sputnik-1 on October the 5th, 1957 and in so doing kicked the Space Race into high gear – where it would remain for over a decade until the Americans landed Buzz and Neil on the Moon in 1969 and took the crown.

This Sputnik-1 model was built in 1957 as a prototype test model for ground Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Electromagnetic Interference (AMI) testing. It’s the exact size, weight, and specification as the Sputnik-1 that was launched into space – but of course the original was burnt up in the atmosphere on re-entry in 1958.

Just 4 official prototypes of the Sputnik-1 were built, and this is thought to be the only one with a working transmitter. It’s due to be offered for sale by Bonhams at the upcoming Space History Sale on the 20th of July. The estimated value is between $10,000 USD and $15,000 USD – which seems like a bargain for such a significant piece of world history.

A Century In The Sky: A Timeline Of American Flight

A Century In The Sky is a timeline of the history of Boeing, the American aerospace giant that’s turning 100 years old this year.

The 20th century saw the invention of powered flight in 1903, and the next 97 years were characterised by the lightning fast development of aircraft – often further accelerated in times of war and in times when the threat of war loomed large on the horizon.

The Boeing timeline is the work of The Atlantic Magazine and it covers all of Boeing’s major milestones from their first aircraft in 1916, through their involvement in both World Wars, the American space program, right through to the release of the new 787 Dreamliner in 2009 – which was the fastest aircraft in history to reach 1000 orders.

The fact that Hans doesn’t use any software or other digital means to create his work seems almost antiquated now, but in another way its pleasantly refreshing. His art is characterised by extreme attention to detail, with a hefty amount of engineering imagination thrown in for good measure.
