U-Turn Audio Orbit Plus Turntable With A Built-In Phono Pre-Amp

Each U-Turn Audio Orbit Plus Turntable is built by hand in Woburn, Massachusetts by a team of dedicated audiophiles who had struggled between overpriced turntables that they couldn’t afford and cheap turntables that they couldn’t bear to listen to.

U-Turn Audio Orbit Plus Turntable Features

Though it looks minimalist from the outside, the U-Turn Audio Orbit Plus Turntable is packed with features you’d usually find on more expensive equipment including an Ortofon OM5E cartridge with a diamond stylus, a built-in phono pre-amp, adjustable VTF, a machined MDF plinth, a machined acrylic platter, a 24V synchronous motor, vibration damping feet, shielded RCA cables, a unipivot tonearm, a manual belt drive, and a 33/45 RPM pulley.

There’s a lot to be said for record players, the warmth and tone of the music vinyl can produce has never really been matched by modern technology, and there’s something genuinely cathartic about removing a record from its sleeve and placing it onto a turntable before lowering the needle.

Audiophile Appreciation

Audiophiles are an oftentimes insufferable bunch who spend more on cables than you do on mortgage repayments so I was surprised at the overwhelmingly positive reception enjoyed by the U-Turn. It’s a turntable that seems to have found a place for itself as a top tier daily use record player for many, including many record collectors with HiFis worth more than my car.

At $379 USD the U-Turn Audio Orbit Plus is anywhere from a third to a sixth of the price you’d expect to pay for a similarly capable turntable, and I’d argue its clean, minimalist design looks better than almost any other turntable on the market.

Each unit ships from U-Turn ready to play out of the box, they install the cartridge and balance the tonearm to you can just plug it in, hook it up, and start playing.

Sir Paul McCartney’s Mini Cooper S Is For Sale

It isn’t every day you get the chance to buy Sir Paul McCartney’s original Mini Cooper S.

The Harold Radford & Co Mini Cooper S

Radford was famous for impeccable coachbuilt Bentleys, typically for country gentlemen, in either shooting brake or estate wagon configuration with acres of walnut, leather, and plush carpeting.

It caused quite the stir when the company unveiled their bespoke Minis at the 1963 London Motor Show at Earls Court, overshadowing many far more costly vehicles, and it wasn’t long before the likes of Peter Sellers, Steve McQueen, and James Garner would order their own.

The Minis modified by Harold Radford & Co were fitted with a Webasto sliding sunroof, Aston Martin taillights, power windows, a wood-rimmed Moto-Lita three-spoke steering wheel, rich woodgrain interior accents, luxuriously upgraded bucket seats, a central armrest, Smiths instruments, custom wheels, and much, much more.

Paul McCartney

Each Radford Mini was created using the now legendary Mini Cooper S as a starting point, so the cars had ample performance capabilities to accompany their new luxurious refinements. Celebrities and those from the wealthier classes of society who found the original Mini a little too unrefined for their tastes generally loved the Radford version, and they sold in much higher numbers than any previous Radford creation.

The surviving Radford Minis almost all have their own fascinating stories, and they now change hands for significant sums of money – even the ones that weren’t owned by Beatles.

Sir Paul McCartney’s Radford Mini Cooper S

As you might expect, McCartney didn’t own just any Mini. Paul and each of his three bandmates owned specially ordered examples of the Harold Radford Mini Cooper S.

We previously featured Ringo Starr’s Mini, George Harrison’s belongs to his wife, and John Lennon’s disappeared years ago, and has since become a bit of an automotive mystery.

It was the Beatles’ famous manager Brian Epstein who would order the four cars for the four musicians in 1965. It’s impossible to calculate just how much this extraordinary exposure benefitted both Morris Motors (the Mini’s manufacturer) and Harold Radford & Co, but it doubtless played a large role in cementing the Mini as a pop culture icon in Britain and around the world.

Paul McCartney Mini Cooper S

After being sold on by McCartney the Mini ended up spending decades living in the Hollywood Hills under the care of Bill Victor, it was later sold to Michael Fisher in Miami, who had the car carefully restored back to original specification.

For the first time in almost 20 years the McCartney Mini is now coming up for sale – considering the fact that the Harrison Mini is still in family ownership, the Lennon Mini has vanished, and that the Starr Mini only sold recently, it’s possible that this is a once in a decade opportunity for collectors to get their hands on one of the most famous and beloved small cars in history.

If you’d like to read more about the car or register to bid you can click here to visit the listing on Worldwide Auctioneers. There’s currently no price estimate, and there’s also no reserve.

The DemerBox is a waterproof stereo built into a Pelican Case, it offers 50+ hours of battery life, Bluetooth pairing with a wireless range of up to 100 feet, and a handy USB port for charging your smartphone, tablet, GPS, etc.

Pelican Cases are renowned for their toughness, they’re used by photographers, videographers, scientists, and soldiers to keep fragile things safe while in transit. The DemerBox takes this one step further by integrating a waterproof stereo, but still allowing enough room in the back of the case for you to put other items you don’t want to get wet – like smartphones, fire lighting gear, maps, or GPS devices.

The fact that the DemerBox can charge mobile devices via USB from its built-in lithium-ion battery pack is possibly an even more useful function than the stereo, particularly when you’re out in the wilderness miles from the nearest power outlet.

Elvis Presley’s 1968 Fender Telecaster Prototype

This is the first 1968 Fender Telecaster prototype that was made – only 6 were built in total, this guitar went to Elvis Presley, and the others went to other 1960s rock luminaries including George Harrison and Jimi Hendrix.

George Harrison loved his Telecaster prototype, he famously used it to record Let It Be and Abbey Road, and he played it during The Beatles’ 1969 rooftop concert.

Elvis kept his Telecaster prototype for a few months and used it a number of times, though not in concert. He eventually decided that the Fender was too heavy when compared with his much loved Gibson and Martin guitars. He sent it back to Fender, and it would be sold off into private hands from there, but its ties to Elvis have followed the guitar throughout its life.

The guitar is now due to be auctioned by Julien’s, it’s accompanied by multiple pieces of original documentation including documents from Fender certifying that it is indeed the first Fender Telecaster prototype that was sent to the King of Rock n’ Roll.

The Hohner Marine Band Harmonica – King of the Harps

The Hohner Marine Band Harmonica was first released in 1896, and it’s changed very little in the hundred+ years since. Although it was initially used in European folk music, it was quickly picked up by American blues and early rock n’ roll musicians, and it became the de facto harmonica for both these burgeoning music genres.

Over the years the Marine Band has been played to sold out stadiums by the likes of John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Butterfield, Little Walter, Neil Young, and dozens of others. Many (if not most) harmonica experts recommend the Hohner Marine Band Harmonica in the key of C as ideal for beginners, but still well and truly full-featured enough to be seen on stage around the world being played by the best in the business.

Harmonicas can be ordered in a range of keys, the Marine Band is offered in 13 keys (and tunings), and many professional players will have a case that contains 5 to 10 different harmonicas to suit all possible requirements. For players just starting out the key of C is ideal as it will match almost all of the harmonica tutorials on YouTube and elsewhere, and it has the range to be played in a wide variety of musical genres.

Hohner designed the Marine Band to last, with a double lacquered pearwood comb, 20 reeds, 0.9mm brass reedplates, and stainless steel covers. There are examples of the Marine Band that are now over 100 years old that are still in regular use.

It’s possible to become a passable harmonica player with a few weeks of practice, though mastering it will obviously take years. There are thousands of free lessons available on YouTube, not to mention countless books, so it’s probably the easiest (and cheapest) time in history to pick it up as an instrument.

The video below includes ample footage of the Hohner Marine Band Harmonica being played by some of the world’s foremost experts, and it includes a discussion including the history of the harp, and some examples of the harmonica being used to play a wide variety of music styles.

The Voyager Golden Record LP Box Set – Earth-Bound Version

The Voyager Golden Record LP Box Set was developed as an Earth-bound companion for the famous golden records contained within both the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 space probes launched in 1977.

As of 2018, Voyager 1 is now the most distant man-made object from the Earth – over 21,000,000,000 kilometres away and continuing to increase at a rate of 520 million kilometers (~320 million miles) a year.

The original golden record was actually gold-plated copper with a 12 inch (30 cm) diameter, fitted inside an aluminium case. The cover contains basic diagrams explaining how to play the record, and how to decipher the images contained within.

Inside The Voyager Golden Record LP Box Set

The Voyager Golden Record LP Box Set is an expansive tribute to the Voyager record and the probe itself, it contains three translucent gold 140 gram vinyl LPs in poly-lined paper sleeves, three heavyweight jackets (gold ink on black) a full-color 96-page softcover book containing all images included on the original Voyager Interstellar Record, gallery of images transmitted back from the Voyager probes, and a new essay by Timothy Ferris – the producer of the original golden record.

These records contain spoken greetings in 55 languages (and one whale language), and an exhaustive collection of Earth music – from Bach and Blind Willie Johnson, to Azerbaijani bagpipes and Navajo chants.

Elsewhere inside the box you’ll find a gold foil print of the Voyager Golden Record cover diagram on special archival paper, measuring in at 12″ x 12″. There’s also a Voyager trajectories turntable slipmat (gold ink on black felt) and a full-color plastic digital download card for all audio of the Voyager Golden Record (offered in either MP3 or FLAC formats).

Order Your Own

There are very few people interested in space, NASA, or technology in general who don’t already know about the Voyager program and its famous golden records. At $98 USD, this box set deserves pride of place next to any self-respecting space geek’s record player.

The Thodio .50 Cal A-Box – The Original Ammo Can Boombox

The Thodio .50 Cal A-Box is known as the original ammo can boombox, each is made using a steel ammunition box previously used to hold .50 caliber rifle rounds.

Each unit is individually handmade in Amsterdam, using 4 inch custom Thodio KSX4 high power, long throw coaxial Kevlar speakers with 3/4 inch Softdome tweeters, and audiophile filter components. These are powered by a highly efficient 200 Watt Class D amplifier, and a 26 hour lithium-ion battery – which can be upgraded to either 52 or 78 hours if needs be.

When ordering your boombox you can choose between having just a normal 3.5mm auxiliary jack, or having additional options like bluetooth, wifi, and even an input jack for an electric guitar. An extra $35 USD will also get you a USB jack which can be used for charging your other electronic devices using the lithium-ion battery inside the .50 Cal A-Box.

Interestingly there is a battery indicator light in the bass reflex port, so you’ll know your approximate battery level by the color – white means full, orange indicates 66% remaining, and red shows that you have 33% remaining.

Each Thodio .50 Cal A-Box ships with a charger allowing it to be plugged into the mains power, and it’s designed to be left plugged in when you’re at home so the battery will always be at 100% when you need it.

The internal lithium-ion battery packs are designed to be user replaceable, and each boombox comes with a 3 year warranty from the factory.

John Lennon’s Monkey Bike – An Original 1969 Honda Z50A

John Lennon’s Monkey Bike might not be something you thought you’d be reading about when you woke up this morning, but there it is. Lennon bought the Monkey Bike, a 1969 Honda Z50A, brand new at the end of the ’60s and used it around his Tittenhurst Park estate – often with a young Julian Lennon onboard.

The Honda Monkey Bike

Monkey Bikes, otherwise known as the Honda Z-series, had originally been designed as a children’s bike for a Japanese amusement park. They proved to be an accidental smash hit – beloved by children and adults alike. Honda put the small motorcycle into production, and they first arrived in Europe and the USA in the mid-1960s.

Initially the Monkey Bike was powered by an air-cooled, four stroke, overhead cam, 49cc engine, with a single cylinder, a single carburetor, and a single exhaust. These little motors were notoriously tough, and could propel even the heftiest of adults, albeit at reasonably slow speeds.

Due to their small size and how easy it is to transport them, Z-series motorcycles became a common sight in the pit lanes of many of the world’s greatest race tracks. They offered an excellent way of navigating the pits, paddock, and other areas, and could then be tossed into the back of a truck or a car trunk when it was time to move on to the next race.

John Lennon’s Monkey Bike

Tittenhurst Park is an original Georgian country house sitting on 72 acres London Road at Beggar’s Bush near Ascot. John Lennon and Yoko Ono lived there from 1969 till 1971, then sold the property to fellow Beatle Ringo Starr who lived there with his family until the late 1980s.

With 72 acres at his disposal, it’s likely that the little motorcycle got its legs stretched often, and one of the period photographs of John (as can be seen above) show him on the bike with his son Julian on the back.

John bought the Honda Z50A the same year he bought Tittenhurst Park, and sold it in 1971 when he sold the estate, likely using the bike for adventures around the grounds and collecting the mail from the front gate.

The Monkey Bike was bought by a family directly from John in 1971, and they kept it tucked away safely over the past few decades – thankfully they were also wise enough to keep it in largely unrestored condition, leaving all the original patina in place from its famous original owner.

The bike is now accompanied by an extensive history file including the green log book, old MOTs, a Honda dating letter, and more. It’s listed as being in running order with the correct frame and engine numbers (Frame: Z50A-147116 – Engine: Z50AE-146584), and importantly it’s still registered with the original registration number as it was in Lennon’s time XUC 91H.

If you’d like to read more about this bike or register to bid you can click here to visit the listing on H&H Auctions. The estimated hammer price is £20,000 to £40,000, possibly making this the single most valuable Monkey Bike in history.

Editor’s Note: The image of Lennon on the bike has been colorized, it was black and white originally. This is why the bike looks black rather than red.
