Documentary: Victory For Suzuki – The 1970 Grand Prix Motocross Season

This documentary covers the complete 1970 motocross season, it was created for Suzuki to celebrate their dominance of the 250cc World Championship, with an outright win in the constructor’s championship, and both 1st and 2nd place in the rider’s championship.

The 1970 season of the 250cc championship was fought largely between Suzuki and Husqvarna, with Suzuki taking 8 wins and Husqvarna taking 4. The Husqvarna factory team was more focussed on the 500cc championship (which they won in 1970) as it was seen as more illustrious, but their loss to Suzuki came as a shock as they’d expected their primary competition to come from ČZ who had taken 1st and 2nd the previous year, with Suzuki in 3rd.

At 25 minutes in length this film offers excellent racing footage from the 1970 season, some of which shows the surprising speeds the riders achieved despite their relatively primitive suspension and brakes (by modern standards).

The film was acquired in original 16mm format and digitized, it belonged to Hall of Famer Billy Uhl (and his father Herb Uhl) as they had been Suzuki dealers in Boise, Idaho.

The Motoped® Pro

The Motoped® Pro is the halfway point between a motocross bike and a downhill mountain bike – with the best characteristics of each, and very few drawbacks.

Many countries (and US states) will allow motorized bicycles on the street with engine sizes up to 49cc, but once you creep over this capacity you have to comply with motorcycle licensing restrictions.

The team at Motoped® developed their original model to fit neatly under this common legal restriction, creating what is essentially a motorized mountain bike, with advanced upside down forks, an adjustable monoshock rear end, and a backbone frame that directly connects the steering head and swing arm pivot.

Engine and Suspension Options

The base model comes with a 49cc engine and 6″ of suspension travel, which will be ample for most people, but you can order up to 8″ of suspension travel and you’ll get a sizeable power increase if you tick the option to upgrade to the 125cc engine.

When you order a Motoped® Pro they ask you to choose between the kit build option or fully assembled – kits are popular with those who want to fit their own engines or modify the bikes beyond the original manufacturer’s specification. Most horizontal E-22 (Honda-style) engines up to 155cc will fit the Motoped® frame bolt pattern, and both electric start and kickstart motors are commonly used.

Measurements and Weights

The wet weight of the standard 49cc Motoped® Pro is approximately 120lbs, the seat height is 35” and the wheelbase is 52″. From a size and weight perspective the bikes are well-suited to being transported on rear-mounted automobile bicycle carriers (keeping within the weight limit of course), then used to explore the local area when you get to your destination.

Depending on the engine and the rider’s weight, fuel economy figures of 80 to 130 miles per gallon can be expected – better than most small capacity motorcycles. And additional fuel can be carried in polycarbonate jerry cans or fuel bags for longer journeys.

Uses and Pricing

Should you happen to live in an area where 49cc motorized bicycles are legal, then there are some obvious cost benefits to using it for regular transport. Fuel economy is excellent, there are no road tax or insurance costs to worry about, and maintenance should be exceedingly minimal.

Most consumable parts like tires, brake pads, chains, and fuel are easy to come by, and engine parts can be easily ordered online – these small Honda-derived engines are incredibly common and are in use in one way or another on almost all continents.

Prices vary between $2,499 and $3,299 USD, possibly making this the best value for money this side of the used motorcycle market.

If you happen to run out of fuel you can pedal yourself along like you would on a normal bicycle, and the most common problem most owners seem to face is that they’re frequently stopped by strangers who’re full of questions about what the bike is, how much it costs, and where they can buy one.

If you like the idea of downhill mountain biking, but don’t like the idea of having to pedal yourself to the top of the hill at the beginning, this might just be your perfect weekend vehicle.

Although it’s now a multi-billion dollar global industry with sponsors like Red Bull and Monster Energy pouring impossible amounts of money into its coffers, it used to be a far more modest affair.

This is the original TV coverage of the ’83 Rose Bowl event, as you might expect its film quality is VHS and the tracking is very slightly out, but for many of us that just brings on the nostalgia. Husqvarna 400 Cross

The Husqvarna 400 Cross is a motorcycle made famous by both its endeavours in off-road racing throughout the late ’60s and ’70s as well as its headline appearance in the now legendary 1971 film On Any Sunday – starring Steve McQueen and Malcolm Smith riding Husqvarnas across a range of Californian terrains.

The 400 Cross was actually powered by a 405cc engine, a single cylinder two-stroke that would launch itself over the rider’s head if they attempted to accelerate beyond the laws of Newtonian physics. The Huskies of the era utilised rigid and relatively lightweight steel frames, advanced front and rear suspension, sealed front and rear drum brakes, broad handlebars and a fuel tank shaped from aluminium – with a section on either side left unpainted to avoid having the rider’s knees rub through the paint unevenly.

This particular Husqvarna was formerly ridden by motocross royalty at the peak of his fame in some of the most challenging competitions he faced – it was the factory bike assigned to Bengt Aberg in 1970, a Swede who won both the 1969 and 1970 World Championships and was famous for riding with a courage and panache unlike anything that had ever been seen before.

Aberg was the people’s favourite, he’s an approachable farmer’s son who grew up driving tractors and took a job as a forest ranger after high school where he learned to ride motorcycles, his natural athleticism and total commitment to going fast resulted in a riding style characterised by him throwing the motorcycle into corners with both of his feet on the pegs. Most riders dragged the outside foot for stability (and many still do), but what Aberg was able to do was maintain more speed through corners than his rivals – resulting in a well-stocked trophy cabinet and a revered position as one of the godfather’s of modern motocross.

The Husqvarna 400 Cross you see pictured above and below is due to roll across the auction block with Bonhams on the 5th of February in Paris, its estimated value is between €15,000 and €18,000 – which actually isn’t much for a motorcycle with a pedigree like this. Steve McQueen’s 400 Cross sold in 2011 for $144,500 USD, making Aberg’s Husky look like a downright bargain.

Penton: The John Penton Story is an upcoming film due to be screened at the NYC Motorcycle Film Festival (September 24th to the 27th in Brooklyn), the story of John Penton is a remarkable one but up until now it’s only really been known to motorcycle geeks and well informed KTM owners.

The full story of John Penton and his staggering ability to both ride and develop world-beating motorcycles is fascinating, realistically he’s a man who should be far more famous as one of America’s most successful sportsman/businessmen – he created a multi-million dollar motorcycle marque, a multi-million dollar apparel company and he travelled around the United States winning races and breaking records.

The 250cc singles from Husqvarna, or Husky as the company is usually called, are remarkably adept at almost any kind of off-road racing you can name, the bike’s lightweight, punchy engine and relatively good reliability was a major contributing factor in the successes enjoyed by the company. Perhaps the most famous fan of the Husqvarna 2-strokes was Steve McQueen, a man who raced and won on the red-tanked bikes so frequently that he became an unofficial company mascot and is still closely associated with the brand 40+ years later.

The Husqvarna 250 MX you see here is due to roll across the auction block with Bonhams at the Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction on the 9th of January 2014, the estimated value is just $4,000 to $5,000 USD, making it a highly-affordable classic motorcycle that’s bound to continue increasing in value over the years.

The retro MX jersey collection over at Reign VMX is one of my favourite recent discoveries, the jersey you see pictured above is the classic Martini design worn by men like Roger DeCoster and Joel Robert in the early ’70s.

Each one is made using modern micro-birdseye vented, moisture wicking fabric with period-correct foam padded elbows and a drop-tail cut in the back to keep your jersey tucked in. They’re designed to fit over standard MX armour and they look a damn sight better than the fluorescent green ‘Monster Energy Drink’ labelled nonsense that you see in modern MX competition.

The team at 100% have been busy recently developing The Barstow, a newly designed pair of googles for a new age of motorsport, where technology is king.
