Qwart Helmets – The Phoenix: A Modular Carbon Fiber Motorcycle Helmet

Qwart Helmets

The Qwart Phoenix is a new, modular motorcycle helmet from Qwart – a European company based in the South of France. Each helmet has a full grade 8 carbon fiber shell with a double density EPS impact absorbing liner that meets or exceeds the ECE R22-05 helmet safety certification standard.

There are two main versions of the Qwart Phoenix, the “Slick” and the “Std”. The former has no visor fitted for those who want to use goggles or ride with an open eye port, and the latter has a built in flip-up polycarbonate visor. Both the Slick and the Std have a carbon fiber trellis chinbar for face protection, with a removable carbon fiber cover that can be swapped out for other colors.

The EPS liner contains a series of hidden channels for airflow that are linked to external ports – allowing airflow across the wearers head to keep them cool. The chin bar also contains twin vents on either side, to keep fresh air flowing into the nose/mouth area and to assist with helmet demisting.

The Qwart Phoenix Modular System

The most significant design feature of the Qwart Phoenix is its modular nature. Designer Xavier Marigo spent 5 years designing and prototyping the helmet, taking great care to ensure that parts are owner replaceable.

You can swap out (almost) every element of the helmet and replace it with aftermarket parts in different colors – this allows riders to match their helmets to their bikes (and/or gear), and it allows them to change up the look of their helmet with nothing more than an Allen key (also known as a Hex key).

Once you have your Qwart you’re able to order the custom trim and vents from your local (or internet) distributor, and the helmet’s removable lining can also be replaced by the owner – in a variety of colors and materials.

Chapal Leather Driver’s Helmet – Race Like It’s 1939

Chapal is a Paris-based company founded in 1832, Charles Lindbergh famously wore a Chapal jacket when he became the first person to fly across the Atlantic in 1927 from Long Island to Paris, taking 33 1⁄2-hours.

The French company developed a line of jackets and leather helmets for early aviators, these were later repurposed by racing drivers and put to use on the race tracks of the 1930s. Chapal would be commissioned by the US Military to produce sheepskin leather jackets for pilots during WWII, and as a testament to their build quality many of these jackets have survived to the modern day.

The Chapal Leather Driver’s Helmet is designed to be true to the helmets worn by many of the greatest racing drivers of the early to mid 20th century – men like Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss. Each helmet is made from high-quality sheepskin leather lined with quitled cotton jersey for comfort – even after hours of racing. As these helmets were first worn by pilots they keep their ear flaps – designed to allow you to wear a radio headset for communicating with ground control.

The helmet is fastened with a double-D ring, there’s also a loop in the back for goggles, and a tightening buckle along the brow. Each Chapal helmet is made bespoke on demand, in sizes from 54 to 61, and in colors including red, tan, blue, and white.

Anker PowerPort Solar Charger – 3 Panel – 21 Watt – Dual USB

The Anker PowerPort Solar Charger is designed to keep your devices charged when camping, traveling overland, or otherwise off the grid. It has dual USB ports capable of charging almost any portable device including iPhones, Android devices, iPads and tablets, cameras, GPS units, flashlights and more.

With an MSRP of $59.99 USD it offers an affordable, compact solution for staying charged in the field – when folded up the unit measures in at 11.1″ × 6.3″, and when folded out it measures in at 26.4″ x 11.1″.

It’s designed with stainless-steel eye-holes on each corner so that it can be opened and attached vertically to your backpack to charge devices on the go, whether you’re hiking, riding a motorcycle, or your bag is stowed on a roof-rack.

The main body of the Anker Powerport is rugged polyester canvas, and the PET polymer-faced solar panels are sewn directly into it. These 21 Watt SunPower solar panels are 21.5 to 23.5% efficient, giving enough power to charge two devices simultaneously.

When laid out ready to charge, the Anker PowerPort Solar Charger has a sleeve on the righthand side that allows you to tuck your devices out of direct sunlight whilst charging. It also comes with an 18-month warranty, and importantly it has built-in short circuit and surge protection.

The TobyRich Moskito is a $49.98 USD remote controlled airplane that you pilot using an iPhone, iPad, or Android smartphone. It wasn’t that many years ago that R/C aircraft were an expensive hobby enjoyed by relatively few – with a significant barrier to entry thanks to the fact that it was commonplace for rookie pilots to crash their planes beyond repair.

Thanks to advances in technology we now have planes like the the TobyRich Moskito that cost next to nothing, have a range of 200 ft, 12 minutes of continuous flight time, and a quick-recharge lithium-ion battery.

The Moskito aircraft is compatible with the iPhone 5s or newer, the iPod touch 6th generation or newer, the iPad 5rd generation or newer and the iPad mini. As well as Android devices with Bluetooth Smart and Android 4.4 or higher.

Once you have the app downloaded and the plane charged, you launch it by throwing it into the air, then control it by either tilting your mobile device left/right/up/down, or by using the included smartphone joystick.

The app includes interactive flight school tutorial that guides you to complete airborne challenges, it’s ideal for both indoor and outdoor flight, and it has 3 difficulty levels to work your way up to expert maneuvers.

Each Moskito comes fully assembled and ready for flight, and for night-flying it has 5 LED blinking light patterns for visibility — standard, always-on, airplane, police, and firefly.

The Maria Riding Company Arrow Miccosukee Surfboard

The Maria Riding Company was founded by a group of friends to create custom motorcycles, surfboards, skateboards, motorcycle helmets, and a wide range of other gear – all of which celebrates counter-culture, adventure, and the great outdoors.

Based out of Lisbon, Portugal, the team at Maria are avid surfers and motorcyclists, living a west coast California lifestyle on the west coast of an altogether different continent.

The Arrow Miccosukee Surfboard was shaped by Nick Uricchio to take advantage of the inherent qualities of a traditional fish tail surfboard design. The “Arrowtail” fins are made from a selection of different woods, contributing to the board’s excellent handling, and ability to tackle a wide variety of waves.

The Arrow Miccosukee is 6 feet long, and it uses the tried and true fiberglass over foam construction, with a plywood spine for additional rigidity.

The Nexx XG200 Flat 6 Motorcycle Helmet

The Nexx XG200 Flat 6 is a modern helmet – with retro styling cues that’ll look right at home on a vintage motocross bike, a scrambler, or well-worn R 80 GS. Nexx is a European company that still makes all of their helmets in the EU with a strong focus on high build quality and premium materials.

The Nexx XG200 Flat 6 Motorcycle Helmet

The XG200 Flat 6 helmet family all use the same X-matrix shell – a proprietary combination of fiberglass with organic fibers, aramid fibers, and carbon reinforcement. This allows a very high level of strength and resistance to object incursion, with a lighter weight relative to a traditional fiberglass shell.

Inside the shell you’ll find an impact-absorbing EPS foam liner, with a final layer of soft padding with breathable and anti-allergenic (removable and washable) fabric lining. The total weight of the helmet is 1200 grams, that’s approximately 42 ounces, and each one comes with a removable sun visor/peak that attaches courtesy of 3 snaps.

The face port has a wide, open aperture to allow excellent vision and airflow, both vital for those southern California desert races, and there are two shell sizes to ensure a less bulky fit for those with smaller heads.

The Nexx XG200 meets or exceeds the DOT (USA), ECE (Europe) and NBR (Brazil) helmet safety certification standards, making it one of the most highly-rated of the retro-modern helmet designs.

The Flat 6 series is made up of 3 unique colorways based on the XG200 family. Each feature a prominent “6” on the side, which can function as your racing number should you happen to find yourself taking part in vintage scrambles or enduro racing.

Belstaff Endurance Boots – Made From Water-Repellent Buffalo Leather

The Belstaff Endurance boots are made in the traditional motorcycle-style from thick water-repellent, full-grain waxed buffalo leather – chosen for its hardiness and excellent abrasion resistance.

Belstaff was originally founded in 1924 based near Stoke-on-Trent in England, they made a name for themselves producing “practical waterproof garments” with a strong focus on motorcyclists – who often found themselves at the mercy of the elements.

Over the years Belstaff has been worn by all manner of luminaries including T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) and countless motorcycle racers in Britain and further afield.

The Belstaff Endurance Boots

The Belstaff Endurance boots take their styling cues from the Belstaff Trialmaster boots, but with a longer shaft to provide additional leg protection. The Endurance isn’t just designed to look like a motorcycle boot either, they’re designed to be highly functional as well, with modern reinforcement in the toe and heel sections, protective cups in the ankles, and there’s a Vibram anti-slip rock-grip sole.

For additional water-resistance there’s an internal waterproof and breathable membrane, for safety there are protective inserts rated to the CE Technical Standard EN 13634:2010, and malleolus protectors on medial and lateral sides.

Importantly, Belstaff have designed the Endurance boots to be comfortable both on the bike and off of it – you can walk even relatively long distances in them without hobbling or walking like John Wayne, a feature not offered by all motorcycle boots.

The boots are offered in both black and brown, and sizes ranging from 41 to 47. In order to accommodate a variety of leg sizes there are two adjustable straps, and a zipper up the inner leg for quickly putting the boots on and taking them off.

The toe section (of both boots) has an additional leather strip to provide protection from wear from the shifter lever, as many vintage motorcycles have the shifter lever on the righthand side – as sidecars were typically fitted to the lefthand side.

Autodromo Stringback Driving Gloves

Professional and gentleman racing drivers have been wearing driving gloves since the early days of motorsport.

The reason that gloves are so important is that being a racing driver is an altogether more vigorous activity than casually driving yourself to work in the morning, hands get blisters after an hour or two (or more) behind the wheel – particularly when you’re driving with a traditional wooden steering wheel.

The Autodromo Stringback Driving Gloves have been designed to evoke the styling of traditional grand prix driver gloves with a drum-dyed genuine sheep leather palm, chosen for its hardiness and thinness, allowing good steering wheel sensitivity.

The 100% cotton crochet stringback was developed to keep the hands cool and comfortable, unlike motorcycle gloves, driving gloves don’t need the back of the hand to be covered in leather as well as the palm.

Autodromo make their driving gloves in four sizes from S through to XL, and there’s a handy sizing chart on their website to allow you to pick the perfect size with a quick single measurement.

The gloves come in four colorways including cognac (shown here), black, navy, and ivory. All have a white stringback except the black gloves, which have matching black backs.

MotorMemo is a logbook developed specifically for use with classic cars, to help owners keep track of servicing, maintenance, parts, expenses, and mileage – all in a book perfectly sized to fit in the glove compartment.

Rather than using steel staples in the spine, the MotorMemo uses a traditional solid sewn binding, this avoids the problem of rust in the seams after decades of use. The corners of the pages are rounded off to prevent them from turning up over time, and the cover is made of thick card printed using letterpress.

The internal pages are superior quality 100% recycled paper, and the book measures in at 13 x 20 cm, with 60 individually numbered pages, and it can be ordered in 4 languages – French, English, German, and Italian.

Blitz BMX Motorcycle Gloves

The new Blitz BMX Motorcycle Gloves have been designed to evoke the styling of the gloves worn by BMX racers in the 1980s – specifically the iconic JT Racing gloves.

Many of us who were kids in the ’80s spent many hours after school and on weekends piloting our BMX bikes on various adventures around our neighborhoods, and some raced their bikes on dedicated tracks, wearing colorful jerseys and pants, helmets, boots, and of course, gloves.

Fred and Hugo, the founders of Blitz Motorcycles in France, were BMX kids in the ’80s too. Hugo is now an avid flat track competitor on a Suzuki DR650 racer they built in their hidden workshop behind an unassuming shopfront in Paris, and when getting kitted out with protective gear he realized that he had everything he needed except a pair of suitably ’80s leather motorcycle gloves.

The two men researched relentlessly and realized that no one was making them, so they arranged to meet with Sophie Grégoire – the CEO of Agnelle, a Parisian glove maker founded in 1937 by a lady, and run exclusively by women ever since.

The two teams joined forces and developed a series of prototypes, designs were honed, and the production gloves were finalized.

Each pair is made from lambskin due to its naturally bacteria-resistant qualities (thanks to its high lanolin content), and linked with silk, chosen as it has natural moisture wicking properties, is long-lasting, and hypoallergenic.

The finger fronts and backs have perforations to allow good ventilation, with accordion sections on the finger backs, and an elastic/press-stud closure. There are a series of colorways available, 4 sizes, and they have touchscreen capable fingertips to allow you to use your phone, GPS, or other devices without having to take them off.
