Crucible of Speed is a film commissioned by Firestone in 1946 to highlight the relationship between the technology used on race cars and the trickle down process that sees many of these advancements ending up on regular road cars.

The film is important for a few reasons, it includes an appearance by the first Indianapolis 500 winner Ray Harroun, and the car he won with – a 1911 Marmon Wasp. The movie has a run time of just under 35 minutes, and it’s well worth a watch, there are a few other Indy 500 winners featured and it’s good to see them all together – albeit selling Firestone balloon tires.
